Rummy

If you love sophisticated card games,
then Rummy is what you need!

Briefly about Rummy

Rummy is a game based on sense and patience. You have to collect combinations of cards by placing them on the playing field and trying to discard all your cards. The better you can plan and organize your cards, the better chance you have of winning. You can play Rummy both with friends in real time and online with random opponents from all over the world

Rummy is a card game for at least two players. Rummy can be played not only by two people, but also by three or four people. Your task is to fold your cards before your opponents do. During the game you need to place cards in groups and sequences, or you can add them to existing combinations. However, it is important to remember that your combinations must meet certain requirements. The round ends when a player places their last card in the discard pile. After that, the round ends and points are counted. And then the next round begins!

In this guide we will look in detail at all the rules and terms of the game.

Rummy playing cards

Rummy uses two traditional French joker decks: a total of 104 cards in four suits (spades, clubs, hearts, diamonds) and 13 ranks - non-figures from deuce to ten plus jack, queen, king and ace - as well as six jokers.

Under standard rummy rules, you can use a joker to replace the missing card in a hand. A combination may also contain two jokers in a row - the main thing is that there are no more jokers than regular cards.

When a player - you or someone else - later receives a matching card, they can replace it with a joker. This way, this player gets the opportunity to use the joker in new combinations.

Rummy Cards - Ranks and Costs

Each card in rummy has its own rank and corresponding value. Cost is important in the following situations: when laying out the initial combination (at least three cards worth a total of at least 30 points) and determining the players' score at the end of the round.

With the cost of cards from two to king, everything is quite simple:

Try not to hold too many valuable cards in your hand towards the end of the round. Because the price of Aces and Jokers changes depending on where you use them:

Rummy field

Now that you know what you'll be playing with, let's get acquainted with the rules of rummy and learn how to play it! The playing field is divided into two areas - a deck with a discard pile and a large area for combinations. Below the field is your hand with cards. During your turn, an indicator will also appear here to show how much time you have left. During an opponent's turn, a timer appears next to their avatar. Finally, your opponents' hands are located along the edges of the field so you always know how many cards they have left.

This is what the online rummy field looks like for four players:

Combination area

This is where players post their combinations. On their turn, all players who have laid out the initial combination can add cards or replace jokers in the groups and sequences located here.

Deck and discard pile

At the beginning of the round, each player receives 13 cards. The remaining cards are placed face down on the table and become a deck from which cards can be drawn. The top card of the deck is then revealed and placed nearby to form a discard pile.

Progress of the game

  • The game of rummy begins with each player receiving a certain number of cards from a common deck. Each player has his own set of cards, which he does not show to other players.

  • The goal of the game is to collect combinations of cards and get rid of your cards, forming “rummy” - a set of cards of a certain rank or suit.

  • Players can take cards from the deck or from an open deck, exchange cards among themselves or put cards on the table.

  • At the start of each of your turns, you draw a card from your deck or discard pile. After this, you can do as many of the actions described below as your hand allows. These actions can only be performed on your turn!

  • To declare rummy, a player must show his card combinations and announce that he has gotten rid of all his cards.

  • After the announcement of rummy, the other players must total their cards and award points for the remaining cards. The player with the minimum number of points becomes the winner.

  • The rummy game can continue until one of the players reaches a certain number of points or a winner is declared after a certain number of rounds.

Laying out combinations

In rummy, you need to create combinations of cards on the playing field. The process of creating them is called laying out combinations. The combination must contain at least three cards. Before you can take any action, you must lay out the starting combination. But first, let's get acquainted with the two types of rummy combinations - groups and sequences.

Groups (or sets) consist of at least three cards of the same rank.

Moreover, each suit - clubs, spades, hearts and diamonds - can only be used once in a group. Thus, there can be no more than four cards in a group.

Chains (or sequences) can consist of 3–13 cards of the same suit in order.

Moreover, each rank can be used in a sequence only once. The cards are laid out in the following order: (Ace), 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, (Ace). An Ace can open or complete a chain, but cannot be between two cards!

Initial combination

The initial combination is laid out first, and its value must be at least 30 points. These points can be scored using several combinations laid out in one move. Otherwise, the normal combination rules apply to this combination (see above). Don't forget that the value of an ace varies depending on where it is: before a deuce it is worth one point, and after a king it is worth 11. After the initial combination, you can take an unlimited number of actions on any of your turns that round.

Adding cards

If you have cards in your hand that can complement combinations you've already laid out, you can add them to those combinations during your turn. In this case, it does not matter at all who posted the combination that you want to complement. The standard rules for combinations apply to the added cards: there can be only one card of each suit in a group, and the chain can consist of no more than 13 cards, counting the opening or closing ace.

Replacing jokers

In some combinations, jokers may be used on the field. If you have a matching card in your hand, you can replace the joker with it on your turn and take it into your hand. This joker can be used on the same turn or later, or discarded as the last card.

End of the game

Did you manage to lay out the cards in combinations before everyone else and discard the last card into the discard pile? So it's time to shout "Rummy!" The round is over and you win! Now the remaining players will be penalized in the amount of the total value of the cards remaining in their hand. On the contrary, you will receive as many points as all other players lost combined.

If your deck runs out before any player has emptied their hand, the round ends without a winner and all players lose points.

A game in Rummy Palace can consist of several rounds, at the end of each of which players will lose or gain points. The game ends after the specified number of rounds. The winner of the table is the player who manages to score the most points!

Special Occasion: Rummy Exit

It may happen that you get lucky and end up with the perfect set of cards in your hand. Take advantage of this opportunity before any player has laid out a combination! Play all your cards in one turn to come out with rummy and end the round. In this case, your opponents will lose, and you will receive twice as many points.

Getting points in rummy

Now you know how to play rummy. But how do you earn points in this game? At the end of the round, each player loses points equal to the total value of all cards remaining in his hand. The winner, on the contrary, receives as many points as all other players lost combined.

The remaining cards in your hand have the following values:

Rank Cost in points
From two to nine is equal to rank (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9)
Ten, Jack, Queen, King 10
Ace 11
Joker 20
